Norwalk

Norwalk provides the perfect blend of California history with new millennium technology. Norwalk’s location in the heart of an expanding regional transportation network is an outstanding convenience to residents that work anywhere in Los Angeles or Orange Counties. Interstate 105 (Century) Freeway runs from Norwalk to the Los Angeles International Airport. The Green Line provides connections to downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach, and LAX; and the MetroLink system, with connections to Orange, San Bernardino, Ventura, Riverside, San Diego counties and the Union Station in Los Angeles County.

As a general law city, Norwalk contracts for services in law enforcement with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. They also contract for fire, water, street sweeping and trash disposal. The city’s award-winning “Community Policing” effort is the reason Norwalk is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in America. It is evident that with Norwalk’s continued growth in business, education, government and law enforcement, a bright future lies ahead.

The La Mirada Unified School District provides the city with eighteen elementary schools, seven middle schools, four high schools and two adult learning centers. Cerritos College in Norwalk is a convenient source of higher learning and the colleges and universities of Los Angeles are also close by.

The city’s Recreation and Park Services Department maintains the 87.3 acres of land that make up Norwalk’s 14 parks. The department offers a variety of athletic leagues for youths and adults. Residents are also brought together by a number of festivals held throughout the year including the annual Halloween festival in October and A Night of 1000 Stars library fundraising event in May.

Norwalk’s points of interest include the Sproul Museum and historical Hargitt House. The city has also been used as a site for the filming of motion pictures and television commercials. Some of the areas utilized include the historic Paddison Farm, Front Street and unique residential areas.

Residents are presented with a variety of special events, instructional classes, a full musical rehearsal facility and the Mary Paxon Art Gallery through Norwalk’s Cultural Arts Center. The Sports Center offers a wide variety of sports and fitness programs for all ages with a basketball gym, boxing room, racquetball courts and an exercise room with state-of-the-art equipment.

Norwalk was incorporated on August 26, 1957 and is the 66th city to become part of L.A. County. Norwalk has been called many names including New River, Siete Alisos (Seven Sycamores), Sycamore Grove and Corazon de los Valles (Heart of the valleys). The city was known as Corvallis before being named after the Norwalk Railroad Station, which was built in the early 1900s. Soon after receiving its name, Norwalk was established as the dairy “Heart of the Valleys.”

The city grew rapidly over the years making it necessary for the construction of educational facilities, electricity, telephone service and roadways and highways. By 1957, Norwalk was certified by the Secretary of State as California's 15th largest city. As a result, progressive health and building standards were adopted, law enforcement increased, storm drainage improved and citywide street lighting districts formed.
